Today was the perfect day for writing the last essay of the school year. That's because today was a rainy day.
All weekend the sun was shining, the air was warm and spring taunted me through the window of my room where I sat trying to write two essays. Finally, today the sky opened up and the rain came down which helped to keep my eyes focused on my computer and not constantly drifting towards the sunlight pouring through my blinds, inducing day dreams every time.
Yes, rainy days are kind of gloomy, but I say all the better for settling down in a nice, comfortable sweater and a pair of sweat pants with tea or coffee or hot chocolate and pounding out a 2,000 word paper.
Rainy days help me to focus on tasks at hand and if I have no work to do, they are great for bonding with friends or siblings over a board game or cards.
Another important part of rainy days is the actual rain itself, but that's such a big topic I think it deserves its own post later on.
So I am grateful for rainy days and the focus it gives me. I am grateful for the cozy atmosphere it creates in my room or the library or wherever I am doing work. And I am grateful that it gives the sun the day off so that when I come back after finishing my work I can enjoy nice spring days to the fullest.

#28- Bird Song
Two things made me smile when I walked out my door this morning, the warmth of the sun and the singing of the birds.
The birds were so happy about the warm weather that they were telling the world about it. It made me think that if the birds are happy then why shouldn't I?
Singing is something full of passion, of uniqueness, self expression, liveliness and fun. For birds, all this is fit beautifully into their language. Think about that, birds are such optimistic creatures that their communication is based on something that breaths life into some of the greatest moments of our lives; singing.
It is these birds, with their songs, that make me remember to slow down and look around, smell the fresh spring air and keep things like essays and bills in perspective.
There is a quote in Bible that goes like this, "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" When I hear the birds singing, I think of this passage and how happy the birds are and that no matter how desperate things seem at times, I will get through life just fine with hard work and the people I love.
So I am grateful for birds and their songs. I have heard a lot of different music in my short lifetime, but none is more organic than those of the birds that sit outside my house every day. Their chirping reminds me of the good things in life and to keep the troubles I have in perspective. And I am grateful that I don't even have turn on my radio to hear some great songs, I can just walk out my door and open my ears to the birds.

#27- Tooth Paste
I woke up this morning tired, as even Saturday morning sleep-ins can't seem to cure me from my late semester laziness. But what was nagging me more than my droopy eyelids was the unsavory taste in my mouth. What I needed was some tooth paste and fast.
After a good brush of the teeth, I was feeling more awake and ready to enjoy the nice, spring day in Ottawa and it's all thanks to tooth paste.
Besides making your mouth tingle with minty goodness, tooth paste does the dirty work to get you that shining smile. A smile can brighten up your day and it can sure brighten up everyone else's day because being happy is usually infectious. Tooth paste helps you to make sure those pearly whites you're flashing are nice and healthy.
And picking a tooth paste is a whole nother adventure. I can't count the number of times I have stood in front of a wall of tooth paste in a store trying to figure out which one I should get, but I like exploring and trying different things and in the end all the different kinds still have the same effect on me, clean teeth and a thumbs up from the dentist.
So I am grateful for tooth paste, the people that make it and for the nice, clean feeling it gives me to start the day and end it too. I am grateful that there is so much variety in tooth paste, but that in the end all the different brands get the job done. And I am grateful that there is one more thing out there that gives me a reason to smile every day.

#26- April Fool's Day
I turned on the radio today and the first thing I heard from the station was that George Bush was planning to run for president again in 2012, after four years away from the White House.
April Fool's!!! No, Mr. Bush won't be going up against Obama next year, but I wanted to get into the spirit of the day by trying to trick you with some clever lies. They probably didn't work, but at least I tried.
April fool's day is all about fun and trying to get your friends and family to laugh at their own naivety. I can not tell you the amount of times I told my mom their was a spider in her hair on April 1st, saw her freak out and then have a good laugh about it with her.
While I guess it does teach our youth to lie, April fool's day also teaches all of us other important lessons; laughing is not a crime, smiling is actually fun and creativity can be used for things other than trying to get the most profit out of consumers.
In this world where constant activity and work is expected out of most people, stress can tear at you very easily. But April fool's day is one of those time's of year that let's people know that taking everything so seriously all the time can make you look like, well, a fool.
So I am grateful for April fool's day. I am grateful that there is a day where everyone can have fun and play pranks and make others laugh. I am grateful this day makes others see that having fun and stopping to laugh is a good thing once in a while. And I am grateful that for one day in a whole year, school kids can be forgiven for putting chalk in the teacher's erasers.
